Please join us in welcoming Ms. Paige Mercanti to the Lions' Den. Ms. Mercanti is the new teacher in our Grade 5 class. Ms. Mercanti is familiar with the Lions' Den, as last year she supported our Grade 1 class for the first two weeks of school. We are excited to have her back at Loughborough and we look forward to learning and growing with her.
Loughborough Public School Open House
We are very excited to welcome our Loughborough community to our LPS Open House. This will be an opportunity to meet your child(ren)'s teacher(s) and to learn about the focus of your child(ren)'s classroom. The Open House will be held on Wednesday, September 30 from 5:00 to 6:00.
Truth and Reconciliation Week
This week is Truth and Reconciliation Week. Truth and Reconciliation Week is an important opportunity for students, staff, and communities to learn about the history and lasting impacts of Canada’s residential school system and to honour the experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. It encourages meaningful reflection, respectful dialogue, and a deeper understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Through education, storytelling, and acts of remembrance, this week helps Canadians recognize the injustices of the past while fostering empathy, respect, and a commitment to building stronger relationships with Indigenous communities. Truth and Reconciliation Week reminds us that reconciliation is an ongoing journey, and that by learning from history, we can work together to create a more inclusive, equitable, and respectful future for all.
Consent Awareness Week
Consent Awareness Week is a chance to close that gap together: to slow down, ask better questions, and practice the kind of respect that makes everyone safer.
In 2022, in response to calls from high school student leaders in the High School Too movement, Possibility Seeds launched Canada's first Consent Awareness Week in collaboration with communities across the country.
During this week, schools are encouraged to explore the resources below to support conversations about consent, boundaries, respect, and healthy relationships.
International Week of Deaf People
During the week of September 21 to September 25, our Loughborough Lions will recognize the International Week of Deaf People. The theme for this year’s International Week of Deaf People is Declaring Deaf People's Human Rights. On Wednesday, September 23, we will recognize the International Day of Sign Languages.
This week, lessons and activities will be dedicated to recognizing and bringing awareness about the Deaf community and to promote the human rights of Deaf people.
EmergencyDrills
During the months of September and October, our Lions will be participating in our Emergency Drills- Fire Drill, Hold and Secure Drill and Lockdown Drill. These drills are important to ensure that students are aware of the expectations and routines in case of an emergency. Please take the time to discuss the importance of these drills with your child(ren) and why we take the time to practice.
Early or End of Day Pick-Up
If you need to pick up your child(ren) during the school day, we kindly ask that you notify your child(ren)'s teacher before the start of the school day whenever possible. If you cannot notify your child(ren)'s teacher before the start of the school day, please email your child(ren)'s teacher during the day. Providing advance notice helps minimize interruptions and distractions to classroom learning.
For pick-ups between 3:10 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., please ensure that either your child(ren)'s teacher or the school office is informed before 3:10 p.m. Due to end-of-day routines and dismissal preparations, it can be challenging to communicate last-minute changes to classroom teachers during this time.

2026 Terry Fox School Run
Forty-six years ago, Terry Fox set out on his Marathon of Hope, inspiring a nation and launching a movement that continues to grow. Our school’s Terry Fox School Run/Walk day is set for Friday October 2nd. More details to come.
Last year, our school community raised an incredible $7136.19 for cancer research. Loughborough Public School's 2026 Terry Fox School Run fundraising goal is $5,700; which is a goal of $285 per class. There are three ways you can help:
• By bringing in a “toonie” for Terry ($2)
• By sharing LPS’ or Homeroom online fundraising page with friends and family (https://schools.terryfox.ca/LoughboroughPSSydenham)
• By ordering a 46th Anniversary Terry Fox Run T-shirt - Ordering is now closed. Thank you to everyone who purchased a t-shirt! Once the order arrives at the school, they will be sorted and sent home before our Terry Fox School run day. All funds collected from t-shirt sales have been added to each class's online fundraising page.
LPS Talize Fundraiser
Are you cleaning out your closets? Great news! LPS has partnered with TALIZE Kingston to fundraise for student activities. Our fundraiser is ONGOING!! Which means you can donate items to TALIZE throughout the entire school year. Spread the word! Check out the attached posters for more details and for what is and is not accepted.
When you donate in person, don't forget to give your items to a staff member at the donation centre AND let them know that it is for the "Loughborough fundraiser".
Human Development and Sexual Health
Below is a link to the list of Human Development and Sexual Health curriculum from grades 1 to grade 8. Please review the expectations and only fill out the exemption form (second link) if you would like your child to be exempted from the Human Development and Sexual Health portion of their Health class.
Families will get a "heads up" from your child's health teacher a couple of weeks prior to Human Development and Sexual Health being taught in their classroom.

Dear Loughborough Families,
Welcome back, Loughborough Lions! 🦁💙💛
We hope everyone had a great first week of school and that we’re all settling back into our routines! We’re excited to welcome back our returning families and give a big welcome to all of our new families. We’re looking forward to another fantastic year at Loughborough Public School!
The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a group of parents, guardians, staff, and community members who work together to support our school. We help with fundraising, family events, school initiatives, and finding ways to make our school community an even better place for our students.
Last year was a busy and exciting one for SAC, and we’re looking forward to building on that this year. We would love to see even more families get involved!
Being part of SAC is a great way to:
- Stay informed about what’s happening at school
- Share your ideas and perspective as a parent/guardian
- Help support activities and opportunities for students
- Meet other families and become more involved in our school community
- Help make a difference in your child’s school experience

We will also be holding our SAC elections at this meeting.
Childcare will be available during the meeting to help make it easier for families to attend. Please watch for details about registration and childcare arrangements.
You do not need to commit to a position just to attend! Come out, listen, ask questions, and learn more about what SAC does. You can put your name forward for a position, share a role with another parent/guardian, help with specific events or projects, or simply attend meetings when you can.
Below is a list of our SAC positions and a brief description of each role. There are lots of different ways to get involved, and we’re always happy to have extra hands when needed!

Piano Lessons at LPS
Carolyn Schaub, teaching piano at LPS and in the region since 2006 will be offering piano lessons at LPS again this year during the school day. Her goal is to instill the love of making music and her teaching philosophy and curricula she uses can be found at www.carolynscreative.com. The cost is $28.50 per lesson or $102.60 per month for 36 half hour lessons during the school year. To reserve a piano spot or ask questions, please email cmschaub@sympatico.ca or call (613)376-6207.
Hot Lunch
Loughborough PS offers the option to order hot lunch 3 days a week. This year, we will have pizza on Tuesdays from Mike’s Pizza. Wednesdays will be subs from Subway and macaroni and cheese from Mike's Pizza, and Thursdays will be Gino’s chicken fingers & fries. Orders are due on the Sunday, prior to the week, at midnight. Lunch orders will begin the week of September 13th. Place your order at https://www.school-day.com. Reminder to all our Lions, hot lunch orders for this week, are due by tonight at midnight.
Late or Cancelled Buses
At times, our school buses are late to pick-up students in the morning or are late getting to school to pick up students at the end of the day. If your child’s bus is late, please visit www.triboard.ca and click on Delays and Cancellations to check on the status of your child’s bus.
LDSB Concussion Protocol
The LDSB Concussion Protocol has been updated to align with the Canadian Guideline on Concussion in Sport (2024) and current international concussion guidance. The changes simplify the Return to Learn (RTL) and Return to Physical Activity (RTPA) process and support a safe, gradual, symptom-informed return to school and activity.
Key changes include:
- Simplified RTL and RTPA stages: Several stages have been combined to create a clearer and more consistent progression for students, families, and staff.
- Earlier return to school: Students may return to school as early as Stage 2, with appropriate supports and monitoring of symptoms.
- Symptom-informed progression: Mild and brief increases in symptoms during Stages 1–3 may be acceptable if symptoms resolve within one hour.
- Earlier medical clearance: Medical clearance from a medical doctor or nurse practitioner is required after successful completion of RTPA Stage 3 and before beginning Stage 4.
- Symptoms after medical clearance: If symptoms return during Stages 4–6, the student must return to Stage 3 and be reassessed by a medical doctor or nurse practitioner.
- School responsibility: The designated lead is responsible for monitoring the student's progression through the RTL/RTPA stages and ensuring medical clearance is received before Stage 4.
- Parent/guardian responsibility: Parents/guardians are responsible for communicating changes in symptoms and providing written medical clearance following RTPA Stage 3.
