Indigenous Education Month

Indigenous Education Month

November is Indigenous Education Month, an important opportunity for our school community to deepen our understanding of the histories, cultures, traditions, perspectives, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. Throughout the month, staff will incorporate Indigenous learning, teachings, and activities into classroom programming as we continue to build knowledge, understanding, respect, and meaningful pathways toward reconciliation.

From November 1 to 7, our Lions will recognize Treaties Recognition Week. This week provides an opportunity for students to learn about the importance of treaties, treaty relationships, and the rights and responsibilities connected to them. Through age-appropriate learning, students will explore the significance of treaties and the important role we all have in building respectful relationships and advancing reconciliation.

Saturday, November 7 is International Inuit Day, providing students with opportunities to learn more about the rich cultures, languages, histories, traditions, and innovations of Inuit across Canada.

National Indigenous Veterans Day, recognized annually on November 8, gives us an opportunity to honour the courage, service, and sacrifices of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit veterans. Students will learn about the significant contributions Indigenous peoples have made, and continue to make, to the Canadian Armed Forces. This learning will also help students understand the distinct challenges and experiences many Indigenous veterans faced during their military service and upon returning home.

Finally, on November 14, our Lions will recognize and commemorate the legacy of Louis Riel. Students will have an opportunity to learn about his important role in Canadian history and reflect on his leadership, advocacy, and efforts to protect the rights, culture, and identity of the Métis people.

Together, these learning opportunities will help our Lions continue to grow in their understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives, and contributions while reinforcing the importance of respect, relationship-building, and reconciliation.

World Diabetes Month

Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, an important opportunity to raise awareness and understanding about diabetes and to show support for individuals and families living with the condition. In our school community, we want students to recognize that diabetes is something some children and adults manage every day, often with the help of healthy routines, medication, technology, and the support of those around them. World Diabetes Month reminds us of the importance of learning about diabetes, promoting healthy choices, and, most importantly, showing kindness, understanding, and inclusion toward others. By building awareness together, we can help create a school community where every student feels supported, respected, and included.

  • Recover lost items from around the school
  • Organize and sort collected items
  • Announce lost and found items by visiting classrooms during nutrition breaks and updating the visual Lost & Found slideshow
  • Reunite items with their owners whenever possible

The Lost & Found will be cleared out and donated three times throughout the school year in support of our TALIZE fundraiser, which helps fund student activities.

Families are encouraged to check the Lost & Found regularly and support the reunification process by labeling personal belongings, especially sweaters, jackets, and other outerwear.

Remembrance Day/Poppies

On Tuesday, November 11, our Loughborough Lions will be commemorating Remembrance Day. This is an opportunity for our Lions to honor those who have served and continue to serve our country. We encourage all our Lions to wear red and black for Red, Black and Poppy Day.

As well, all students will be given a poppy from the Royal Canadian Legion. Students are encouraged to bring in a donation to support the Sydenham Royal Canadian Legion.

Scholastic Book Fair

Our Loughborough Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for the week of November 9 to November 12. Students will have the opportunity to purchase books starting on Monday, November 9. On Thursday, November 12, the book fair will remain open until 6:00 for families to visit and to purchase books.

LPS SAC Winter Planter and Wreath Fundraiser

LPS Winter Planters and Wreaths Fundraiser

Our School Advisory Council (SAC) is excited to share this year’s primary fundraising goal: the purchase of 50 new devices (iPads and Chromebooks) for our classrooms!

Technology has become one of the essential ways students learn every day. With our amazing, growing school population, many of our current devices are shared between classrooms. This means that students must often wait for access to this invaluable technology.

By adding 50 new devices to our school, we can ensure that every student has the tools they need to enhance their learning, create, and explore knowledge through current technology. We want to provide equal access and opportunity throughout our school community.

We know that limiting screen time and teaching safe use of screens is paramount for child development. However, it’s also essential that children learn to use technology responsibly and confidently. Digital skills are now a core part of education, and having reliable access enables students keep up with today’s learning expectations.

💻 New Devices Will Help Students:

• Work on writing composition, math, and research projects

• Use learning programs and creative tools

• Learn coding and digital skills

• Have faster, more reliable access during lessons

• Access assistive tools that support students with learning needs (speech to text, read aloud, word prediction, organization tools, and more)

🎉 Fundraisers That Support This Goal:

·     SAC will be hosting a variety of enticing fundraisers, kicking off with our new Winter Planters & Wreaths Sale

·     Watch for more fundraising opportunities throughout the year, such as our annual Cake Bingo and Family Fun Night, and new LPS community events

·     Each one helps us reach our goal of adding 50 new devices (iPads and Chromebooks), while providing a chance for our community to come together. Every planter, wreath, ticket, donation, and volunteer hour brings us closer to giving our children the technology they deserve to succeed.

Subway Hot Lunch Orders- October 25 to November 7

From October 25th to November 7th, our local Subway will be closed for renovations. During this time, subs will not be offered as an option for hot lunch. We will continue with sub orders once the renovations are complete.

Volunteering at LPS

We are grateful for the support of our many volunteers who help make our school community a great place for students to learn and grow.

If you plan to volunteer at our LPS this year, please ensure that your Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)/Criminal Police Information Check (CPIC) has been completed within six months of the date you begin volunteering.

As part of a new Limestone District School Board process, volunteers must obtain a current school letter to include with their VSC/CPIC application. South Frontenac OPP now process checks online. Please contact the school office by phone (613 376-3848) or email (lough@limestone.on.ca), and we will gladly provide you with the required LDSB volunteer letter to submit with your application.

Once you have received your police record check, it can be submitted to the school office or downloaded to the LDSB Police Record Check Portal.

After an initial VSC/CPIC (completed within the previous six months) has been approved, a new police record check is required every three years. In the years between renewals, volunteers must complete and submit an Annual Offence Declaration Form.

Please note that fees for police record checks may vary, and some volunteers may be charged by the police service while others may not.

Thank you for your interest in supporting our students and school community. We truly appreciate the time and commitment of our volunteers.

Early or End of Day Pick-Up

If you need to pick up your child(ren) during the school day, we kindly ask that you notify your child(ren)'s teacher before the start of the school day whenever possible. If you cannot notify your child(ren)'s teacher before the start of the school day, please email your child(ren)'s teacher during the day. Providing advance notice helps minimize interruptions and distractions to classroom learning.

For pick-ups between 3:10 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., please ensure that either your child(ren)'s teacher or the school office is informed before 3:10 p.m. Due to end-of-day routines and dismissal preparations, it can be challenging to communicate last-minute changes to classroom teachers during this time.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in helping us maintain a productive learning environment for everyone.
